Drexel Sweeps Towson in Conference Series

The Drexel Dragons took on the Towson Tigers in a 3-game conference series in Maryland. This series included a 9-inning night game on Friday (4/7/17) and two 7-inning games on Saturday (4/8/17). The Dragons swept the Tigers this series, improving their conference record to 4-2. Both 7-inning games ended up in a mercy rule with the Dragons playing 5-innings for each games.

Game 1:

In the first nine inning conference game of the spring, Greg Markowitz toed the rubber against Towson University. Markowitz pitched his best game yet for the Dragons as he went 5 2/3 innings, striking out 9 batters and holding Towson to only 1 run. Jack Levine came in relief and pitched a strong 3 1/3 innings, striking out 5 batters and giving up 1 run. The Drexel hitters scattered 7 hits throughout the game, but were able to capitalize on the Towson errors. In the winning effort, Tyler Wicker drove in 2 runs and Patrick Bowlin went 2-4 with a run scored. Levine was credited with the win in the 4-2 game.

For Game 2, Brenton Rayner picked up the win against the Tigers. He pitched a 5-inning complete game, scattering 7 Towson hits, striking out 1 batter, while giving up only 1 run. Rayner received huge run support from the Drexel batters as they generated 12 hits on the day. Matt Caldwell started the scoring with his first homerun of the season in the second inning. George Armentani also crushed his first homerun of the season later in the fourth inning. Other noteworthy performances included Tyler Wicker who reached based all four times, going 2-2, scoring three runs and Patrick Bowlin who doubled and tripled in the game, scoring two runs.

In the last game of the series, the Dragons came out swinging. They scored 7 of their 13 runs in the first inning, limiting Towson’s starting pitcher to only 1/3 inning. Matt Caldwell continued his hot streak as he went 3-4 with two doubles, and three runs scored. Shane Metzger went a perfect 4-4 on the day as he hit two doubles and scored 2 runs. Jake Moss took the mound for game three. Moss had a quality start as he pitched a 5-inning complete game, giving up 3 runs while striking out 2 batters. The Drexel Dragons look to carry this momentum into their next conference game against the Delaware Blue Hens.
