The Dragons hosted the Pioneers in a 3-game conference series. This series included two 7-inning games on Saturday (4/29/17) and a 9-inning game on Sunday (4/30/17). Drexel won all three games with final scores of 11-1 in each game. The Dragons are riding a 10 game winning streak and are still in first place in the North Atlantic-East Conference. Under new Head Coach Chris Martin, the Dragons are a perfect 6-0 and look to continue that going into next weekend.

Game 1:

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Drexel 3 1 2 1 4 0 0 11 8 0
Sacred Heart University 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3 0

In the first game of the series, the Dragons offense came out strong as they scored three runs in the first inning, including a two run shot to left field by Michael Melady – his third of the season. Tyler Wicker continued to smoke the ball as he went 2-2 with two doubles, scored two runs, and walked twice. Drexel consistently scored runs throughout the game and gave pitcher Greg Markowitz more help than he need.  Markowitz’s line included 5 innings, 3 strikeouts, and 1 earned run. He pitched very efficiently and was able to complete the entire game as the Dragons won in a mercy rule with a score of 11-1 in five innings.

Game 2:

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Drexel 0 0 0 4 5 2 0 11 10 2
Sacred Heart University 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 4 0

For the second game of the series, the Dragons turned to Brenton Rayner and he did not disappoint. Brenton continued to dominate opposing batters as he tossed 6 innings of one run ball, striking out 6 batters and scattering 4 hits. The Dragon bats stayed hot to help Brenton pick up his fourth win of the season. Shane Metzger went 2-2, which included his second home run of the season and a double. Michael Melady continued his torrid hitting streak as he launched another bomb against Sacred Heart. The game ended in a mercy rule with the final score of 11-1 in the 6th inning.

Game 3:

Team 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 R H E
Drexel 1 3 0 0 4 2 0 1 11 16 0
Sacred Heart University 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 4 0

Needing only one more game to complete the sweep, the Dragons came out ready to play. Behind the arm of rookie Thurston Lu, Drexel managed to pull away early and give Sacred Heart little hope of winning. After just two innings, the Dragons were up 4-1. As Lu continued to shut down Sacred Heart’s offense, the Dragons tacked on another four runs in the fifth, increasing their lead to 8-1. Scoring two more runs in the sixth and one in the eighth, Drexel completed their three-game sweep over Sacred Heart as they won the game by mercy rule at a score of 11-1. Thurston Lu was credited with the win on the day as he went six innings for the Dragons with seven strikeouts, two hits, one earned run, and only one walk. An amazing day on the mound for Lu was backed up by Drexel’s hitting. Standing out on offense for the Dragons was junior Patrick Bowlin and sophomore Mike Melady. Bowlin would go 2-2 on the day with three walks in five at bats, giving him a perfect on base percentage for the game. Bowlin would also be deadly on the base path as he swiped three bags on the day and scored four times. As for Melady, he would continue to dominate for the Dragons with a double and a single going 2-4 with two RBI’s. With the sweep over Sacred Heart, Drexel has now won ten games in a row and has improved their conference record to 10-2. The Dragons will look to carry this momentum into next weekend at Rutgers as they play one more conference series to conclude their regular season. Continue to catch all of the Drexel Baseball action by following us on Twitter (@Drexel_Baseball) and Instagram (drexelbaseball) for news and updates.
